Minimum Wages and the Cleaning Industry

It may have gotten lost in all the turmoil after the November 4, 2020, general election, but another item on the Florida ballot -regarding minimum wages – has the potential to have a significant impact on the state’s professional cleaning industry.

minimum wages

Florida voters passed a measure that would increase the minimum wage in increments to $15 an hour by 2026.

Florida is certainly not alone when it comes to raising the minimum wage. In the past two years, about half of the country’s states have also increased their minimum wage

This is a financial relief for many service-based workers, such as those in the professional cleaning industry. And there are other benefits as well.

Here is how we at Service Keepers have decided to handle this situation, and we believe it will help us reduce the impact of the wage increases while still maintaining the high-quality services we want for our clients.

First, we are adding more robots to our cleaning arsenal. Cleaning robots are designed to do repetitive tasks like vacuuming carpet and cleaning floors. By turning these duties over to robots, our cleaning workers can attend to other cleaning duties.  In time, we may find we do not need as many workers in each location. This would be a cost savings for both Service Keepers and our customers.

Second, we are looking into “re-engineering” existing cleaning programs. In the past decade, worker productivity in the professional cleaning industry has increased significantly. However, there is no end point; this is a journey.

By re-engineering existing cleaning programs, we are turning to our in-house cleaning experts and cleaning experts around the country to help us learn how to do more, faster, with fewer workers, and still protect your facility’s health and provide quality cleaning.

In the meantime, contact us.  Let’s discuss this situation. It is best handled when we work together.
